2009: Work has started on a new 250-seat church hall for Witard Road Baptist Church in Thorpe St Andrew, Norwich, to allow the growing fellowship to expand its activities and services.

The whole project will cost around £700k and the existing building will remain and be refurbished to be used for other outreach and community activities.

Pastor David Adams said: “As a growing fellowship we have been aware for some time that there are restrictions on the activities we can provide as a result of the age, size and configuration of our current building.  It has served the church very well for 50 years but the decision was made and planning permission obtained to further develop the church site.

“The contracts have now been signed and the first phase of building works has begun. The development will comprise of a new 250-seat main hall to be used for worship and teaching events. When that is complete and funds are available, phase 2, a suite of new smaller meeting rooms, will be added,” he said.

WitardBuilding2“The church is meeting the challenge of raising the funds which are currently costed at approximately £350k for each phase,” said David. “The plans are on display in the church and we are very happy to share with any who would want to consider helping us achieve these goals.”

Currently Sunday services attract around 100 to 120 people and there is a growing youth work coming under the banner of Urban Saints (which used to be Crusaders), the midweek groups for 7-11s and 11-16s in particular are thriving.

As well as ladies’, men’s, prayer and care groups, other community activities run by the church include: Disabled Christians Fellowship; Craft & Scrapbooking; Toddlers; Reel Issues film evenings; Prison Ministry Team and a Woodside House team who visit and take a service once a month in the care home.
