Norfolk leads the way on climate change

Burkina Faso the wave2009: Christian Aid and other charities are offering opportunities across the county to prepare for December's international conference on climate change in Copenhagen.

On 5 December a coach is running from Norwich to The Wave, the national rally on climate change in London (details below).

The rally will call on rich countries to cut their carbon emissions, and provide funds for developing countries to adopt clean technology and adapt to climate change.

Poor countries like Burkina Faso (pictured right) are simultaneously experiencing droughts and flooding as climate becomes more extreme and less predictable.

Meanwhile at 7.15pm on Wednesday 11 November, Professor Kevin Anderson, Director of the Tyndall Centre, and Anne Pettifor from the New Economics Foundation will be addressing climate change at the United Reformed Church, Princes Street, Norwich. This will be followed by a rally in Norwich on Saturday 21 November (starts at 12 noon in Chapelfield Gardens).

Norfolk has already led the way with record-breaking giving to support a climate change project in one of the world's poorest countries. In February Melissa Ilboudo, a student at the University of East Anglia, launched an appeal which has since brought in over £35,000 via the Norwich Christian Aid office. Thanks to matched funding from the European Union, this equates to more than £140,000 for her home country, Burkina Faso. There will be opportunties to hear Melissa share her vision on:

Sunday 15 November, 6.30pm at Kings Lynn Baptist Church (corner of Wisbech Road and Saddlebow Road)

Sunday 22 November, 7pm at The Church on the Way, Churchill Road, Thetford

Sunday 29 November, 10am at Diss Community Church, Vinces Road, and 11.30am at Harleston Community Church, which meets at Archbishop Sancroft School

This autumn Melissa visited the project, which is 'making the desert like the Garden of Eden' (see Isaiah 51:3). She brought back the pictures below, showing (left to right) Ali, a local farmer, in the desert on the edge of the project; Ali walking through land which has been restored; and Melissa and Ali together.

Tickets for The Wave (£20 adults, £10 students) are available from the same address. The coach will pick up from the UEA (opposite Sportspark) at 7.45am and The Holiday Inn on Ipswich Road at 8.15am. It will return between 7pm and 8pm.
