Norwich church celebrates member’s centenary

Doris KeebleA church in Norwich held a special Sunday celebration in honour of the 100th birthday of one of its members, who had played badminton until she was 84.

St Paul’s Church, Hellesdon held a special service on Sunday 2 September in honour of the 100th birthday celebration of Doris Keeble (pictured right).

After a service led by Rev Paul Griffiths which included a talk by Howard Norton celebrating Doris, over 50 members of the church family enjoyed a shared lunch in her honour.

Roy Forder, Church warden of St Paul’s Hellesdon, said: “As we went into the hall Doris was met with a long table laden with food and, at the end by the stage, a large cake in the shape of 100 alongside her photograph and a basket of flowers.

“We had tried to keep the surprise party from Doris but she had sussed out that we were up to something!”

Before lunch Rev Paul Griffiths gave a little address teasing Doris by handing her a newspaper, because after church on a Sunday she likes to go home and read hers.  He also remembered that it wasn’t until the age of 84 that she had given up badminton.

The church congregation are putting together a memento of photos and notes that people had written on cards to remind Doris of her celebration.
