GP who hit headlines speaks in Norwich

RichardScott450Dr Richard Scott, the Christian doctor with 28 years’ experience whose case hit the national headlines after sharing his faith with a patient, was the guest speaker at a Norwich FGB dinner on Thursday, September 11 at the Brook Hotel, Bowthorpe, NR5 9JB.

Dr Scott, 51, is a father of three from Margate in Kent, and the author of the book Christians in the Firing Line. His wife, Heather, is also a GP.

The former missionary doctor became national news after the General Medical Council ruled that he “crossed the line” in talking to a patient about faith at the end of a consultation – although other patients had said their lives were turned around after speaking with Dr Scott and attending a local church - and were ‘flabbergasted’ by the GMC verdict.

"He speaks as a human being who has his patients’ best interests at heart,” said one patient.

Half-way through the two-year battle to try and clear his name (supported by colleagues), Dr Scott, a former sportsman, developed bowel cancer. Out of this experience came the new book, God - I’ve Got Cancer, a message of hope for anyone who becomes seriously ill.

In this month’s British Journal of General Practice, Dr Scott reports on recent research “which shows that the effects of faith on health are extraordinary.””

He is aware that 14 million people have cancer in the UK and US alone. His own illness began a mission “to discover whether faith in God makes a difference in cancer.”
