Learn to paint icons at Walsingham chapel

2018: Renowned Iconographer Helen McIldowie-Jenkins will be holding two-day Icon Painting taster workshops at St Seraphim’s chapel in Little Walsingham next year, and bookings are now being taken.

These will be two-day practical workshops where participants will be given step-by-step tuition to ‘make & take’ a small icon. Traditional artists' materials will be provided, and participants will gain an understanding of the history, meaning and use of Icons.

The weekend workshops will take place in the new gallery space at the chapel and provide a basic introduction to icons and the technique of icon painting. Participants will be able to make their own small icon and gain a deeper appreciation of Russian icons (and our Railway heritage!) through the tradition established at St Seraphim’s.

St. Seraphim’s is a unique heritage site in the North Norfolk pilgrimage village of Little Walsingham, incorporating a traditional Orthodox Chapel in the Byzantium style, Quiet garden and heritage display of the Icon collection.

In addition to a Fine Art diploma (St Alban’s College of Art & Design) a fellowship to the Digswell Arts Trust (Fine Art & Ceramics) and a teaching qualification, Helen McIldowie-Jenkins holds a first class BA Honours degree in Art History and was awarded an MA scholarship by the Edmund J. Safra Foundation to the Courtauld Institute of Art, London. Her MA dissertation investigated an unusual form of 13th century Italian crucifixion iconography.

Helen has worked in museum and adult education environments (teaching History of Art /Late Medieval Italian Painting) and in the London art auction world (as a Cataloguer at a leading Russian art auction house and at Christies). She is a Roman Catholic and Secular Franciscan (OFS) and is now based in West London.

Helen says: “Since the early 1990s, I have undertaken numerous commissions for cathedrals, churches, organisations and individuals in the UK and US. Unlike other icon painters, I mainly specialise in composing ‘new’ and original icons to meet the artistic needs of today’s church in terms of devotional art. The subject matter can range from saints of the early church (where no prototype image exists) to images more appropriate for use within today’s diverse and multicultural faith communities.”

The workshops will run from 10am to 4.15pm on the following Saturdays and Sundays:
May 18 and 19, June 8 and 9, July 20 and 21.

The cost is £25 for the two days. There will only be limited spaces and priority will be given to local participants. Would-be participants are urged to book as soon as possible.

St Seraphim’s Chapel is on Station Road, Little Walsingham, Norfolk, NR22 6EB
