New Thetford church helps vulnerable families

A new Thetford church, launched during the pandemic, has boxes and boxes of children’s clothes which it wants help to give to vulnerable families in the town. Keith Morris reports.

Thetford Vineyard church has set up a clothing centre, called GrowKids, for 0 to 11-year-olds at the Charles Burrell Centre in the town and church leader Tor Bush has appealed for people working with needy families to contact them.

“We have been overwhelmed with generous donations,” she said. “Now we want to reach out to people who need the service. We want to connect with midwives, Police, schools, social services and those on the front line who know those people in poverty who we can help.

“We know that domestic abuse has been on the rise in the pandemic,” said Tor and we have been working with the Vera Trust to reach domestic abuse victims. Our first bags of clothing were given to a dad who was fleeing domestic abuse who was in a hotel with his kids and nothing except what he stood up in.”

In its first month the GrowKids project has given away over 20 bags of clothing. “We have a fantastic team of volunteers from both inside the church and outside of it,” said Tor. “Our real heart as a church is to reach our community and create a church with fuzzy edges and get people from outside the church involved.”
