Norwich church to stage free activities week

A Norwich church is set to stage a week of free activities and events in a city park during the first week of the summer holidays.

Summerfest is back in Waterloo Park in the first week of the school summer holidays, July 22 to 27, staged by CityGates Church (formerly Surrey Chapel) following a successful week last summer.

Bev Dubberley at CityGates Church travelled to Australia to see how the originators of Summerfest ran their festival – so this year it’s back, bigger and better and kicking off with a weekend of free fun for all ages.

Organiser Bev said: “During a week we're putting on a series of free events for all ages, including a holiday club for ages 4-11, a pop-up parents cafe, as well as English conversation classes, craft tent and other activities during the afternoons and dancing during the evenings.”

“Saturday and Sunday promises inflatables, face-painting, welly-wanging and much more... You can even enter your proud pooch to the Summerfest Dog Show. 11–14-year-olds are invited to the Sunday Youth night where they can be sure of plenty of crazy games and activities.

“In the week following (Monday July 24 – Thursday 27) 4 -11-year-olds can join the Secret Agents Academy Holiday Club. It’s an epic week of games, crafts, bible stories, quizzes and challenges. While the kids are busy, parents can hang out in the parent’s café, with pop-up talks each day at 10am, with everything from supporting your child’s mental health, to how to keep your busy family fit. There is a cost to this of £3 per child per day,” said Bev.

“Summerfest afternoons provide a chilled opportunity to do some crafting, or hang out in the Summerfest café while your 8 – 14-year-olds can join in with some field games! On Monday afternoon there are English conversation classes with qualified TEFL teachers from 2- 4pm.

“The fun continues with Summerfest Nights when beginners to pros can join in with a free salsa dance class, or if that’s not your style, try some American line dancing. Round off the week with a traditional pub quiz on Thursday night at 7pm.”
