Why encouragement is so important

Regular contributor Ruth Lilley explains why words of encouragement play such a vital role in all our lives.

Last week I had the privilege of attending my daughter’s Parent’s Evening. I have to say I left the evening feeling very proud as I heard the feedback from each of her teachers. As a mum, it was great to hear all the positive comments and praise. However, as I reflected back, I felt it was even more important that my daughter heard all those encouraging words too.

Each day, I see how children respond to a positive word or a kindness shown. I see faces brighten as they receive praise for the many things they achieve or attempt to achieve as they journey through the school day.

Praise, encouragement, kindness, positivity…they all contribute to building something good. I watched my daughter grow as she heard those affirming words being spoken over her. At school, I see children thrive and bloom as they consistently hear words that notice and applaud all the great choices they make.

I have discovered that children respond much more readily when they are receiving praise and encouragement. Therefore, I wonder if adults also show the same response? I think they probably do!

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (New International Version)

The Bible tells us to encourage one another and build each other up. I know how important, how valuable it is to do this as I see this each day at school. Yet, how often do I make it a priority to use words that affirm and encourage in all parts of my life? I know I should say, ‘not often enough’.

People are transformed by hearing words that build up and inspire. Hearts are given hope, minds become more purposeful.  Yet I know I sometimes make the choice to use words that knock down and deflate.

With each sun comes a new day, and the opportunity to do something good. Jesus was kind and affirming with His words and actions, and with the strength and power of the Holy Spirit, I can encourage and build up. It takes very little effort to praise another person, and I know the benefits far outweigh the effort. Knowing that person will grow and thrive because I have made the choice to put them first and find the goodness in their actions and words should motivate me.

So, as I take the next step, today and tomorrow, I will make the choice to notice - to encourage and build up the people who are journeying along with me.
