UEA are crowned church football champions

Church football teams from across Norfolk have been celebrating league title wins in the Norfolk Christian Combined Adult and Youth League. And the next two weekends see the knockout cup competitions reach their climax.

UEA Christian Union are celebrating after clinching the senior men’s league title after losing out on goal difference last year to Mount Zion.

This year, there were still five teams in with a chance of victory with a month to go, making this the most open contest in years. But, UEA managed to hold their nerve and wrapped up the championship with a game to spare. Runners-up were Surrey Chapel and top goalscorer was James Bailey (Proclaimers).

The first-ever season of the Under 10s league saw St John’s end up on top. Second place was clinched by Thorpe Salvation Army in their last game against the champions. Special mention to Cringleford, who only missed second place on goal difference.

In the Under 12s league, St Peter’s Easton, and St John’s were running pretty close all season but St Peter’s finally got the edge.

For the Under 14s, Surrey Chapel took first place quite a few weeks ago edging away from the rest. Kings Community Youth finally secured second place in their final match.

St John’s completed a fine season to also secure the Under 16s league title. The runners-up is not yet settled but is between St Catherine’s and Brooke Adventurers.

This Saturday, May 5, sees the finals of the senior Men’s Bishop’s Cup Final and Wroxham Road Shield knockout competitions.

Both take place at St Faith’s Centre in Horsham St Faith. The Shield is between Surrey Chapel and Proclaimers at 10.30am and the Bishop’s Cup at 1.30pm is between Kings Community Church and Norwich Central Baptist Church who are the also the current cup holders.

The Youth Cup Competitions will take place on Saturday May 12, 9am at the new 3G Astroturf pitches at Thorpe St Andrew School.

The teams taking part are:

Under 12: St John's versus St Peter's Easton

Under 14: Meadow Way versus St Peter's Easton 'A'

Under 16: Broadland Lads versus St Catherine's

This programme will also be given out free at each of the finals.
