Cantonese and English first in Norwich church
By Margaret Hardingham
A church service held simultaneously in both
Cantonese and
English at a
Norwich church is believed to be a first for the county.
The first ever joint English and Chinese Cantonese Methodist Church service was held at Wroxham Road Methodist Church, Sprowston,.on July 6 to help celebrate their respective 50-year and 10-year anniversaries.
It is believed to be the first such service in Norwich and possibly Norfolk. The hymns were sung simultaneously in Cantonese and English by the 150-strong congregation and they both finished at the same time.
The speakers were the Rev Nigel Fox and Edmond Tsui. After the service there was a free barbecue, despite lots of rain.
A retiring collection was taken for the ongoing relief work in Sicheuen China following the recent earthquake and £430 was received.
